I aggree with Mervyn Danker's argument for the immediate need for the Keystone project and others like it. We have the technology and knowledge that will allow us to make protection of the environment and energy independence not mutally exclusive. The facts are that there is not enough alternative energy sources to meet the needs of the western democracies. We may be decades away from having alternative energy sources significant enough to replace traditional fossil fuels. In the meantime the world evolves in real time. Brutal dictatorships with sinister intentions test our resolve everyday. We transfer hundreds of billion dollars of our national wealth every year to these regimes who gladly use these funds to build their economies and finance hatred and death against us and our allies. We must placate the Saudis so they can keep the flow of oil coming and look the other way while they finance the midrasas and other intstituions that become centers of hate that ultimately to lead to violence against innocent people. This money should be spent in our country developing all types of energy, fosill and non fossil based, and putting more of our people back to work. With the advances of science and tecnology that we have made over the last 10 years, the environment can be protected better than ever as we obtain energy independence from the thoughtful and appropriate use of all our resources. However there needs to be a balance between environmental protection and legitimate development of our energy resources. If the United States is not strong economically and politically then the quality of life for all democracies will suffer much more severely than the impact of any oil pipeline. I do not think the remote possiblity of harming the dwelling of a caribou in alaska or canada should out weigh the very real possiblity that many US and Israeli soildiers and civilians, and other allies will die because we lack energy independence. I respect the fact that Jewish Organizations place a high priority on the protection of our environment. they should, it is a core value. However the highest value that we hold dear, the sanctity and protection of human life, can be deminished significantly if we do not develope energy independence in the very near future.

Danker pretty much dismisses the environmental concerns with the one line statement, " we find the objections insufficient to block the planned pipeline." The Obama administration is saying that the pipelines should be thoroughly reviewed, not blocked. There needs to be some balance between environmental concerns and the important goal of energy self-sufficiency, which Danker does not bother to address. He reminds me a little of the "drill, baby drill crowd" and that is scary.

When it comes to carbon-based energy sources, a healthy dose of "conservatism" is in order, that is, doing things at a measured pace. I certainly don't mind taking a little longer to get the pipeline project done right from an environmental perspective.

Technology will solve our excessive dependency on oil -- but not in a year or two. All you have to do is to dig into the research going on in various university Materials Science departments, like Stanford. Huge increases in battery storage capacity and significant improvements in solar cell efficiency will make electric cars superior to petroleum fueled engines and reduce the need for hydrocarbon-generated energy.

However, all this will TAKE TIME. Meanwhile, for energy security we need the Canada pipeline. The administration's thinly disguised effort to placate Obama's environmental supporters is unfortunate. Safeguards and careful routing of the pipeline will minimize the dangers posed by the pipeline. The focus should be on safeguards and energy security instead of getting Obama re-elected. In fact, when you think about it, might Oabama have a better chance of re-election if labor was with him?

This is a really cool program. I wish that our Federation was specifically involved! What can we do to make that happen?

I think that these "activists" should focus their efforts on making Hamas to meet the following conditions:

1. Recognizing Israel's right to exist as a homeland for Jewish people.
2. Denouncing violence and terrorism.
3. Participating in direct talks with Israel.

In my opinion the Flotilla II is a provocation that will cause unnecessary loss of life and deepens the conflict.
